"The Foot" is the third episode of the first season of Six Feet Under. It was written by Bruce Eric Kaplan, directed by John Patterson and first aired on June 17, 2001.

Synopsis[]

When a bakery owner is killed, it's up to Federico to put the pieces back together.

Story[]

At Haussman's All-Natural bread company, a man named Thomas Romano is cleaning the inside of a dough mixer when it is suddenly activated due to a bug landing on his assistant's hand, causing the latter to accidentally activate the machine and result in his boss being chopped into several pieces. Unfortunately, the last thing he heard before his death was his teenage employee asking if anyone had ever had sex inside the mixer.

After Nate and Brenda have sex, he says that he wants to go back to Seattle and even though he has known her for only two weeks he asks her to come with him. Meanwhile, Ruth is getting tired of David complaining about the business and is even more disappointed about him not soaking his oatmeal. Nate has decided that he wants Ruth and David to sell the business to Kroehner but later changes his mind since he realizes that it may be his calling.

Claire and Gabe share another romantic evening of sucking toes only to later come out to her car and see that it has been vandalized with phrases like "little piggy lover" and "toe slut". Luckily enough, she finds the severed foot belonging to Thomas Romano at home and puts it in Gabe's locker as payback. This results in her getting into trouble with the school and Keith steps in to clear her name by dealing with Gabe. Later, Claire finds Keith at the site where the foot was discarded and tells him she knows he and David are gay.

At Thomas Romano's open casket viewing, Federico tells Nate and David to watch the widow as she may attempt to climb into the casket. Nate and David rush to pull her off along with the daughter and they are told that the latter and her mother just want to see the shoes he's wearing. To the brothers' surprise the missing foot appears to be intact and Federico explains to the brothers that he used a bone from a joint of meat he found in the freezer so no one would notice a difference.

Matthew Gilardi shows up at the Fisher house and informs Nate that Kroehner has purchased the dilapidated house across the street where Nate and Brenda earlier made out with each other and Gilardi says the intention to turn it into a funeral home to rival the Fishers. When Claire arrives home following her chat with Keith she informs the family that the house across the street that Kroehner purchased is on fire. The family goes outside and are shocked by what they see.

The episode ends with a woman out walking her dog by some wasteland and when she calls to him he appears with the missing foot in his mouth.
