She began her acting career in the Australian drama series before coming to international recognition in a supporting role in the comedy film Muriel's Wedding.
In 2001, she came to further prominence with her role as Brenda Chenowith in Six Feet Under, gaining a Best Actress award at the Golden Globes in 2002.
Further acting roles include the ABC drama series Brothers & Sisters, the films Blow and Ned Kelly as well as the film Hacksaw Ridge.
Alan Ball was initially reluctant to cast her due to her Australian accent but she got the role when she arrived for the audition complete with a perfect American accent. Her chemistry with Peter Krause also impressed everyone.
